Reading the shelf…
Canyon Market is a specialty independent running 2 Bay Area stores, small-format at about 3,670 sq ft each, indexing high on established names versus other Bay Area grocers.
Fungusamongus isn’t on Canyon Market’s shelf yet in any of its 2 stores. The opening: 1 category where the shelf is already deep and the brand runs strong elsewhere.
Lead with Organic Dried Shiitake Mushroom in Dried Mushrooms.
Canyon Market stocks dried mushrooms thinly, so a differentiated snack stands out instead of becoming the Nth option on a crowded shelf. It already earns space at 3 other Bay Area grocers.
The more differentiated opening is dried mushrooms: Canyon Market stocks only 3 there, so FungusAmongUs Organic Dried Shiitake Mushroom stands out rather than blending in.

Canyon Market, as a specialty retailer, typically sources products directly from vendors, especially those that align with their focus on health and wellness. The first step for emerging brands is to submit their product through Canyon Market's dedicated vendor/supplier form. This approach allows you to present your offerings directly to their team, which is essential for independent markets like Canyon that prioritize unique, high-quality products tailored to their community's needs. When considering new products, Canyon Market looks for items that promote clean, wholesome ingredients and sustainability. They value local and artisanal products that resonate with their mission of enhancing the neighborhood's food culture. Be prepared to articulate how your product aligns with these values and meets the specific tastes of their customer base.
