Reading the shelf…
Woodlands is a specialty independent running 3 Bay Area stores, small-format at about 2,336 sq ft each, indexing high on clean-organic versus other Bay Area grocers.
Oars + Alps isn’t on Woodlands’ shelf yet in any of its 3 stores. The opening: 3 categories where the shelf is already deep and the brand runs strong elsewhere.
Lead with Sunscreen Lotion SPF 35 in Body Sunscreen.
Woodlands stocks body sunscreen thinly, so a differentiated snack stands out instead of becoming the Nth option on a crowded shelf. It already earns space at 1 other Bay Area grocer.
Woodlands carries body wash in real depth, 38 SKUs against a fleet median of 10, so a new entry there is the Nth option, and its per-unit price would likely sit near the top of a crowded shelf. The more differentiated opening is body sunscreen: Woodlands stocks only 9 there, so Oars + Alps Sunscreen Lotion SPF 35 stands out rather than blending in. Lead with the body sunscreen, and position the body wash as a finishing or gift item.
Woodlands merchandises 3 of the 4 categories the brand sells.
no strong clean/diet signal either way.
brand excitement 70/100.
enters a thin body sunscreen shelf as a point of difference.
Every category Oars + Alps plays in across the Bay Area grocers we track, and where it stands at Woodlands. Depth is the distinct SKUs the store carries there versus the fleet median, shown next to the rival brands already on that shelf.

Where it would price in body sunscreen. Each dot is a product on the shelf, by its cost per fl oz (hover for which). Oars + Alps (orange) sits below the shelf.
Oars + Alps’ SKUs Woodlands doesn’t carry yet, ordered by how many other Bay Area grocers already stock them.
Presence and depth are measured from Woodlands’ current Bay Area storefront: its online catalog plus our shelf photos, a partial view. A widely-distributed brand shown as a new door may already be carried through channels we don’t index. Woodlands profile →

The store barely carries this category, so it is a hard sell.
